Each of the acute hospital NHS Trusts in the South West has undertaken a self-assessment against these standards, using a range of resources and support materials (www.southwestdementiapartnership.org.uk/hospital-standards).
Hospitals have been asked to produce local improvement plans by 30 June 2011. A peer review is planned for September to November 2011 in each of the hospital sites in the South West.
Peer Review format
- 1-day site visit by a multidisciplinary group;
- Observe the environment and delivery of care in different parts of the hospital;
- Engage with staff and people working in a voluntary capacity in the hospital;
- Meet with the Trust Chief Executive, Medical Director, Board lead for dementia and clinical lead for dementia;
- Produce a report for the Trust and commissioners, and make recommendations for continued improvement.
Site visit team membership
- Each team will comprise,
- South West Dementia Partnership nominated lead for visit;
- Senior nurse (Director level);
- Primary Care Trust General Practitioner lead for dementia;
- Commissioner (acute care or dementia);
- Senior mental health practitioner, mental health liaison services;
- Geriatrician – Care of the Elderly Physician;
- People with lived experience (service users; carers/families;
- Independent Mental Capacity Act advocate;
- Voluntary and community sector – e.g. Alzheimers Society; Age Concern, Dementia UK.
Site visit team arrangements
The programme for the visit will be arranged with the hospital in advance. The South West Dementia Partnership will advise hospitals about the purpose and format of the peer review. It will ask hospitals to:
- identify a named lead for the visit, for the purpose of agreeing and finalising arrangements;
- provide key documents for the team in advance of the visit;
- provide a room for the site visit team to use during the visit;
- identify individuals and groups to meet with the team;
- communicate with staff and partners about the visit, in advance.
